Legal & Law Professionals as Volunteers

Volunteer Opportunities for Law and Law Enforcement Professionals.

While Project REAL is happy to benefit from all manner of volunteers, we have some resources which require the expertise of certain types of professionals.  If you have work-experience from a lawfirm, legal-department, a courthouse, or in law enforcement we hope you’ll consider volunteering with us to meet those needs.

Signing up with a volunteer profile doesn’t mean you’re committed to joining, just that you’re willing to be contacted to discuss the opportunity.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out by creating a profile at http://bttr.im/aagh9 or simply email our Program Director Mike Kamer at mkamer@projectrealnv.org to request more information.

‘Play By the Rules’ Classroom Presenters

Ideal for Active & Retired Law Enforcement Officers & Attorneys

Play By the Rules is an award winning curriculum licensed and distributed by Project REAL in Nevada.  This material is designed to teach middle school students over 200 laws specific to Nevada and the consequences of violating those laws.  Project REAL is seeking Law Enforcement officers and attorneys to visit classrooms who are engaged in or that recently completed the Play By the Rules curriculum to answer any questions the students may have while providing a more enriching experience overall.

You may have your own idea of how to present which would be excellent, however Project REAL is also happy to help by providing recommended scenarios and discussion topics.  We provide optional trainings and will ensure you are prepared for your classroom visit by providing you with a copy of the curriculum the students have been studying.

‘When It Happens to You’ Classroom Presenters

Ideal for Active & Retired Prosecutors, DA’s, and Criminal Defense Attorneys

When it Happens to You’, pairs up defense attorneys and prosecutors to speak with high school students about the process of encountering police officers.  Attorneys will be paired to provide two points of view to the students – that of what law enforcement thinks they should do, and what a defense attorney advises.  At the conclusion of the presentation, pocket-sized copies of the United States Constitution are provided to the students by Project REAL  (as with all our programs, this material is provided at no cost to the school or students).

You may have your own idea of how to present which would be excellent, however Project REAL is also happy to help by providing recommended scenarios and discussion topics.

The attorneys will be asked to discuss what happens when students begin speaking with an officer and what their rights are. Then each attorney offers their perspective on how to act in situations the students may unwittingly find themselves in.  For example, you and the attorney you’re paired with may suggest “So you’ve just been pulled over, and while the officer approaches the car your friend suddenly discloses that they have illegal substances on them.  What do you do when it happens to you?”

After each attorney provides their perspective, the pair will work together to answer student questions about the arrest process, how students can responsibly exercise their rights, and more.

‘K-4 Courthouse Basics’ Classroom Presenters

Ideal for active or retired judges, attorneys, and law enforcement officers)

Project REAL provides ‘Your Day in Court’ to students in grades 5-12.  To help prepare them for their field trips in the upper grades, we are currently developing single-class period speaking presentations for grades K-4. Our goal is to have volunteers visit classrooms, teach some basic concepts and vocabulary about courthouses, and to have these visits happen around the same time as the 5th grade field trips at each school, so students look forward to the day they get their first courthouse visit from Project REAL.

Your goal will be to spend half of the classroom period covering some basic concepts of the courts, and the other half answering questions from the students.   You may have your own idea of how to present which would be excellent, however Project REAL is also happy to help by providing recommended scenarios and discussion topics.  We will also provide you with an explanation of what we try to explain at each grade level from K-4 so that you can have an understanding of how our cumulative lessons fit together.
