This School Year, Teach Your Students to Play By the Rules

On November 3rd, 2016, posted in: News by Comments Off on This School Year, Teach Your Students to Play By the Rules

To the middle school teachers and parents of middle school students in Nevada: Project REAL invites you to request Play By the Rules for your students or children.  This book presents over 200 of Nevada’s laws to middle school students and those involved with the juvenile justice system in an interesting and thought-provoking way. While teachers are welcome to provide this 10-15 class period curriculum on their own, Project REAL will work to connect instructors with law enforcement officers who volunteer to assist with teaching this material. By working together, Project REAL, law enforcement officers, and teachers can help Nevada’s students gain knowledge, critical thinking skills and the attitudes necessary for success.

A message for teachers: With books typically arriving within 2 weeks of each request, now would be the perfect time to stagger the lesson throughout the year for your students.  Using Play By the Rules in the classroom ‘every other Friday’ or in some similar way is a great method for implementing the 10-15 day suggested teaching plan without disrupting your lesson plans in the coming school year.  It also provides an opportunity to give your students a small change in pace in the classroom every few weeks.

We invite you to view a digital version of the student guide here:

If you would like to request sets of Play By the Rules books for your school, please call 702.388.7527, email mkamer@projectrealnv.org, or get a head-start on the process by following the instructions in our account creation guide which can be found here:  http://bit.ly/projectrealaccountguide

As always we will provide these resources at no cost to the schools, students, or teachers of Nevada.  With no reason to hesitate, we hope you will contact us today!

Testing Goes Digital This Month at Project REAL!

On September 6th, 2016, posted in: News by Comments Off on Testing Goes Digital This Month at Project REAL!

For many years, Project REAL has requested teachers who use our materials to issue pre-tests and post-tests to their students.  Teachers would typically mail in paper forms which the Project REAL team would then tally and archive.  This helped us to see how our activities were impacting students in small batches, but was highly time consuming.  If you would believe it, sometimes the students’ handwriting was a bit difficult to decipher as well!  This month, that all changes.

Starting this school year, all of our pre-tests and post-tests will be issued digitally through online portals.  In addition to providing almost instantaneous results, we will also be able to adjust questions or add in new feedback options and have those alterations apply instantly!  This provides us a number of unique opportunities.  For just one example, we will now be able to see how students who interact with Project REAL across multiple school years progress behaviorally and academically.

We made this decision after conferring with many of the teachers we’ve worked with in the past, out of concern that some teachers may have difficulty providing their students with access to computers.  After a healthy period of research, we have decided to move forward and are confident in our decision to do so.  Should there ever be any issue for any instructor relating to this decision however,  Project REAL will accommodate those classes in any and every way possible.

We look forward to sharing some of the results we see after this school year concludes, so be on the look out for some exciting data from Project REAL in mid-2017!

Field Trips, Books, and More: Our New Teacher Request System is Up and Running!

On July 31st, 2016, posted in: News by Comments Off on Field Trips, Books, and More: Our New Teacher Request System is Up and Running!

Since late April this year, we have quietly been busy setting up a new tool for Project REAL: A profile system for teachers that will automatically allow them to order books and reserve field trip dates!  For years we’ve had a fax-in-form based system that worked well, but required a bit of back-and-forth when it came to scheduling.  Starting today, that all changes.

After a 10-15 minute profile set-up, teachers are able to request whichever resources they require from Project REAL.  They will be able to see what is and is not available in field trips.  Eventually, we hope to implement something similar for our books so a live view of what we have in-stock is available!

The system we are using was originally designed for volunteer management (another area of our service which we are excited to be expanding), so the profile creation process might be a bit confusing for some.  Fortunately that is a one-time process, and one which we are happy to do for all the wonderful teachers we partner with now and those we partner with in the future.  If you are an instructor and wish to attempt the process on your own, simply follow the instructions in the guide at this link:  http://bit.ly/projectrealaccountguide

If you would prefer to complete the profile creation process over the phone or are simply looking for an excuse to say hello, we welcome you to call us at 702.388.7527.  If now is not the best time simply email our Program Director Mike Kamer at mkamer@projectrealnv.org and let him know when one of the members of our team should call you, and we will make that happen.
